Farm Theme Party.

A Farm Theme Party is a unique party theme for a casual gathering of friends. Anyone who grew up on a farm will enjoy a farm theme party because of the fond memories it will bring back. The farmer theme is easy to do, informal and great fun. Be sure to take pictures of your decorations, and the guests who dress for the occasion.

Icebreakers
Here is a link to some farm animal tirvia. You can use this information in several ways. You can turn the trivia facts into trivia questions, for icebreakers.

For a different, fun icebreaker write individual facts on pieces of paper for people to draw out of a can, or bucket. The person drawing out the fact reads it silently. Then he/she gives three facts, two are false and one is the fact from the piece of paper. Other guests try to guess which fact is true.

Costumes/Attire
Here are some basic costume suggestions. Let your imagination go from here.

  • Denim jeans and western style shirts
  • Overalls, with or without a shirt underneath.
  • For the ladies, long skirts, denim jeans, western shirt top
  • Cowboy boots, work boots, or no shoes at all
  • A bandanna handkerchief spilling out of a pocket, or tied loosely around the neck.
  • Corncob pipe, long stem of grass or wheat to chew on
  • Cowboy hat (maybe a sunflower stuck in the headband), or work hat with ear-flaps

Decorations
Here are some suggestions for decorations. Use your own imagination to create a simple setting, or go all out for a real country ho-down.

  • Set your table with a red & white checked table cloth, red & white checked napkins, use tin cans for drinking cups (be sure there are no sharp edges).
  • Use a 3 gallon bucket as a punch bowl or fill it with ice to cool cans & bottles.
  • A Kerosene lamp or lantern for the centerpiece.
  • A Rope coile up like a lariat, laying on a sprinkle of straw for a centerpiece
  • Serve food in cast iron a skillet and keep your bread in a dutch oven.
  • Use straw bales for end tables and/or seating.

Food
Just about any American style food fits with a farm theme party. There are some great farm-style food recipes on the PBS, America's Test Kitchen website. You will have to register to get the recipes, but there is no cost. Extra Crunchy Fried chicken is delicious and goes great with All American Potato Salad. Here are some other ideas you may want to expand upon

  • Fried catfish
  • Boiled crayfish
  • Barbecue ribs
  • Corn on the cob
  • Baked potatoes
  • Biscuits
  • Watermelon
  • Cherry or peach cobbler

Activities
I never met a farmer who did not love to play dominoes. There are domino games in a broad range of complexity and to accomodate different numbers of people. Here is a link to the rules of a wide variety of domino games. My suggestion would be the following, listed in order from easiest to most difficult. After a night of dominoes, you will be hooked for life. If you have a larger group of players have more than one game & switch people around occasionally.

  • Draw Dominoes - normally 2-4 players
  • Muggins - normally 2-4 players
  • Chicken Foot - Depending on the size of your domino set 4-10 players
  • Mexican Train - depending on the size of your domino set 4-10 players
  • Forty-two - 2-7 players
